Our credit union was created by and for employees of the West Seneca State School in January 1964. It was originally known as the West Seneca State School Federal Credit Union. The office was located in the basement of the Administration Building on East & West Road. Our services included loans and share accounts.
On July 29, 1975, our name changed to the West Seneca Developmental Center Federal Credit Union. In 1983, our credit union became fully automated, causing such growth that it expanded from the basement of the Administration Building to a new home on East & West Road in 1988.
Throughout the years, with growth and expansion of services and more members, the credit union’s name again changed from the West Seneca Developmental Center Federal Credit Union first to the West Seneca DDSO Federal Credit Union in 1992 and then again to its current name, the Western New York Federal Credit Union, in 1996.
The WNYFCU opened our first branch office on the grounds of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center in 1993, when we merged with the Buffalo Psychiatric Center Federal Credit Union. In 1998, the WNYFCU purchased the main office building at 7 Willowdale Drive. In 2004, as we celebrated our 40th year of service, we merged with the Lackawanna School System Federal Credit Union.
On January 15, 2010, our Main office at Willowdale Drive and our Branch location at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center closed and, on January 19, 2010, we celebrated the grand opening of our current location at 1937 Union Road, West Seneca, New York 14224.
The credit union has grown with the addition of several employer groups, the first of these being the employees of the Children’s Psychiatric Center and then SAS, Inc. The mergers with the Buffalo Psychiatric Center Federal Credit Union and the Lackawanna School System Federal Credit Union have made us stronger than ever before.
In November of 2005, the Western New York Federal Credit Union received Community Charter designation, expanding membership eligibility to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in the cities of Buffalo and Lackawanna and the suburban municipalities of Aurora, Cheektowaga, Depew, East Aurora, Elma, Lancaster, Orchard Park, Sloan and West Seneca, as well as businesses and other legal entities located in those communities.
On September 1, 2017, the Western New York Federal Credit Union’ Board of Directors received and approved our updated designation as a Community Chartered credit union, opening membership to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in and businesses and other legal entities located in Erie County, New York.
Through all our growth and expansion, our primary goal has remained the same: To consistently provide quality personal service every day while maintaining financial stability.
